Dont worry if you are, many people are asking the same question " MP3 ringtones Samsung Galaxy S " and according to what search results you read on the web you will find sites saying you need special mp3′s for the samsung galaxy or buy mp3s for samsung galaxy or mp3 converters for samsung galaxy i9000 a couple of sites state you need to create special folders on your samsung galaxy s to use mp3 ringtones, even sites saying you can not use an mp3 as a ringtone for a samsung galaxy mobile. The sites selling special ringtone mp3s and mp3 converters for your samsung GT-i9000 may be right. Even creating special folders on your mobile may work fine, there is one statement that is definately wrong though, anyone who says you can not use mp3 ringtones on your Samsung Galaxy S mobile phone do not know what they are talking about.

Having purchased a Samsung Galaxy and went throught the ringtones on the phone, read through the manual, clicked on a few buttons here and there, I thought myself that maybe you can not use your favourite mp3 as a ringtone as within the voice call ringtone area there is no option to add an mp3 ringtone to the samsung galaxy ringtones list, so off to the web I went looking and the amount of questions and answers (none of which I tried) asking about using an mp3 as the ringtone, on this phone was unbelieveable. The very next day however, I found the solution whilst clicking on buttons and I can tell you now, You can use mp3s as a ringtone on the Samsung Galaxy S GT-i9000 phone and I did not need any special mp3s or Samsung mp3 converters to do it. Read on and I’ll tell you how in five simple steps.

Follow these simple instructions and you could be using your mp3 as a ringtone in less than a minute

Step 1. Make sure you have some mp3′s already on your phone, if you haven’t then copy some across first.

Step 2. Go to Applications and then My Files and go to the folder where you have stored your mp3s.

Step 3. Click the file and it will start playing in the media player. When it does press pause.

Step 4. Press the bottom left menu Key and a menu shows up.

Step 5. Press the set as option and select what ringtone you want to use it as.

Thats it, your favourite mp3 should now be setup as your ringtone with no special converters or special ringtone mp3′s

Its possible that you may need to use small mp3s, I’ve used five or six different ones and they are all under 4MB and work fine.

This is ok for adding mp3s to the incoming call list but none of the “set as” options populate the notification ringtone list and I’ve not found a way of changing the default SMS or notification sounds. Any wisdom on this appreciated.

How to use an MP3 file as either a notification ringtone or a SMS ringtone CAN BE DONE and it does involve creating some folders.

IMPORTANT, the following folders must be created with lowercase letters, you phone will most likely default the first letter as a capital so you will need to press the shift button twice to turn off the cap lock.

Step 1. Open Applications – then My files.

Step 2. Press the home button at the top of the screen to make sure you are in the root folder.

Step 3. Press the bottom left menu key and a menu shows up.

Step 4. Press Create folder and name this folder media

Step 5. Select this new folder and create a further folder called audio inside it.

Step 6. Select this new folder and create a further folder called notifications inside it.

Step 7. Browse to the location where your mp3′s are saved and copy then into this new media/audio/notifications/ folder

Now either go to Message ringtones (settings from messaging) or Notifications ringtones (settings – sound and display) and your ringtones will appear in the list for selection.

I don’t know how you find these things out, but thanking you lots. I wish the Samsung guys would’ve put this in the user manual. It is so basic as it currently stands.

        thanks again C

Thanking you very much. I’ve been searching everywhere trying to figure out how to do this. All I need to do now is find out how to make an mp3 a notification ringtone ….? Any ideas??? I find the notification ringtones too mousey and not long enough and especially not loud enough. I’ve just come from a windows phone (samsung omnia) and the way it handled meeting alarms was great. If Samsung could only allow one to set up meeting alarms as it does clock alarms.

    thanks again. C

Hi, I did the 5 steps above, but it still goes back to default ringtone. Could it be because my mp3 file is about 5.2MB?

    • admin says:

It could be because of the size of your mp3.

If the first option did not work for you then try the alternative option shown above in the replies to create the folders and move your mp3 files into there.

That way they should always be within your notifications list.
